HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 10 (UPI) -- At least 15 men have been arrested by Zimbabwean police amid allegations of a plot to launch an armed rebellion against President Robert Mugabe.
Police reportedly seized a cache of weapons in Mutare and detained senior officials of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, the Telegraph reported. Since its founding in 2000, MDC has pledged to unseat Mugabe via the ballot box.
The weapons are allegedly linked to a British-based group, the Zimbabwe Freedom Movement, which authorities claim has strong ties to the MDC. The MDC has repeatedly stated, however, it has no connection to ZFM.
Police say they found weapons at the Mutare home of Michael Peter Hitschmann who allegedly is a ZFM member. The MDC has denied any connection with Hitschmann.
The state-controlled Herald newspaper reported that police believed there was a plan for a tear gas attack at Mugabe's 82nd birthday celebrations in Mutare on February 25.
"This is a state plot to destabilize us ahead of our congress next week," said Nelson Chamisa, a spokesman for the MDC.
