NEW YORK, March 10 (UPI) -- Bill Gates, worth an estimated $50 billion, has been tabbed the world's richest person for the 12th consecutive year in Forbes' rankings of the super-wealthy.

Warren Buffett, worth $42 billion, is runner-up with Carlos Slim Helu ($30 billion), Ingvar Kamprad ($28 billion) and Lakshmi Mittal ($23.5 billion) rounding out the top five.

In its inaugural ranking of the world's richest people 20 years ago, Forbes said there were about 140 billionaires. This year a total of 793 people are considered billionaires. The last year another 102 people reached billionaire status, the magazine's editors said.

Forbes said the people on the list are worth a combined $2.6 trillion, 18 percent more than a year ago, and have and average net worth of $3.3 billion.
