PESHAWAR, Pakistan, March 7 (UPI) -- Pakistani government forces reported recapturing a town Tuesday from Taliban guerrillas, 11 miles from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Pakistani military spokesman Shaukat Sultan told Radio Free Afghanistan while Taliban fighters fled the town of Miran Shah, they still held strategic positions in nearby mountains.
Sekander Qauim, Pakistan's secretary for the tribal areas, said at least 146 people have been killed since last Wednesday when fighting around the town began. Officials in Islamabad said about 100 of the dead are militants.
Several hundred militants seized government buildings in Miran Shah on Saturday, following the bombing of an alleged militant hideout by security forces last week that killed dozens of people, the BBC said.
Sporadic fighting around the town was reported Tuesday, with government forces using air strikes from fighter jets and helicopter gun ships.
