CHICAGO, March 8 (UPI) -- A 22-year-old man, apparently intoxicated, managed to get through a security gate and eventually on to a runway at Chicago's Midway Airport.
The incident last Saturday caused airport authorities to briefly close the runway, the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune report. City officials have ordered an investigation into the security breach.
The man, identified as a citizen of Poland, was charged with reckless conduct and trespassing on airport property, and advised to contact his consulate, the report said. Investigators said he apparently walked or ran through the gate undetected while a vehicle was leaving, the reports said.
A Southwest Airlines pilot spotted the man standing between two runways and alerted the control tower. The security officer posted at the gate during the breach has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
