Boomers retiring to out-of-way places

WASHINGTON, March 7 (UPI) -- Rural areas in the United States are gearing up to convince the nation's 77 million baby boomers they should spend their golden years in the boonies.

Stateline.org reports rural areas see boomers as a way of revitalizing their communities, often abandoned by younger residents seeking employment in big cities.

Boomers are rejecting established retirement communities in Florida and Arizona and opting instead for unconventional locations in the South and West, Stateline said. The first of the boomers turn 60 this year, some returning to childhood hometowns or college towns.

The one glitch might be providing medical and social services, which might be lacking in small communities, once seniors' health starts to deteriorate.
