Four unexploded devices were found less than a mile from the site of the first blast.

In addition to the 12 fatalities, an unknown number of people were injured and taken to hospital at the Benaras Hindu University, NDTV reported.

Indian leaders feared the blasts, centered on a religious site, could draw sectarian violence.

India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the attacks and asked that people remain calm.
