CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 6 (UPI) -- Harvard has reportedly launched an internal investigation into the conduct of an economics professor who allegedly defrauded the U.S. government.
Andrei Shleifer was a consultant for the government in the 1990s, working in Russia on privatizing industry. He allegedly invested in Russian companies, and last year he agreed to pay $2 million and the university $26.5 million in an out-of-court settlement.
The Financial Times, citing internal sources, said that Harvard's Committee on Professional Conduct launched an investigation several months ago.
Shleifer is a close friend of Harvard President Larry Summers, who announced his resignation recently.
Harry Lewis, a Harvard professor of computer science and author of "Excellence Without a Soul," a book about the university, said that Shleifer should be disciplined.
"No one has said it's a stain on the university," he said.
