WASHINGTON, March 3 (UPI) -- The chief archivist of the United States has asked U.S. intelligence agencies to refrain from removing previously declassified documents from public access.

Allen Weinstein, the U.S. archivist for about a year, said he was unaware of the problem until a New York Times article last month. Historians have asked Weinstein to take action, too.

Weinstein told the agencies to halt the reclassification of documents until the National Archives can check to see which papers should be withdrawn.

The Times said that since 1999 some 55,000 pages of information had been reclassified. Some of the documents were dozens of years old and had been photocopied years ago by historians, who reported the papers were now missing from public access, the newspaper said.
