Hamas envoy says it may change course

MOSCOW, March 2 (UPI) -- The Palestinian Authority's envoy to Russia says Hamas may reconsider its position toward Israel.

In an interview with Itar-Tass, Ambassador Baker Abdel Munem said Hamas' current view is that it should not recognize Israel as long as Palestinian lands are occupied.

"I think that Hamas may change its position in the interests of the whole Palestinian people," Munem said.

Israel, the United States and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan have urged Hamas to recognize Israel's right to exist, give up terrorism and accept the peace process to be acknowledged as legitimate. Israel is withholding taxes it collects for the Palestinian Authority and the United States has demanded the return of financial aid and said no more aid will be given unless those conditions are met.
