Bush lauds troops in surprise Afghan visit

KABUL, Afghanistan, March 1 (UPI) -- President George Bush Tuesday told U.S. troops in Afghanistan they must remain "steadfast" in their fight against Afghan insurgents and terrorists.

"You are fighting an enemy and bringing them to justice so they won't hurt our fellow citizens again. That mission requires steadfast determination," said Bush.

The president's visit to Afghanistan was not announced before he landed at Bagram Airfield outside of Kabul.

Earlier in day, Bush met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and praised him for recognizing "his country wants democracy."
