Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
BERLIN, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The German government is denying a New York Times report it provided the United States with intelligence on Baghdad defenses before the invasion of Iraq.
The report was based on a classified 2005 study of Iraqi military strategy by the U.S. Joint Forces Command, and includes a sketch of Baghdad indicating Saddam Hussein's defense plan. It said a German intelligence liaison officer provided the sketch and the information about the plan to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency in Qatar in February 2003.
But German government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm denied the country's BND security service did any such thing.
"The New York Times allegations are wrong in all their details," Wilhelm said.
German opposition parties are now demanding a formal investigation into whether the government had deceived the public by publicly proclaiming opposition to the war while privately helping in it.
Germany, along with France, remain opposed to the occupation of Iraq.
