KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Canadian Brig. Gen. David Fraser took control Tuesday of coalition forces in southern Afghanistan as his U.S. predecessor said fresh violence is expected.
The multinational group that includes Canadian, British, Dutch and U.S. military forces is intended to rebuild Afghanistan.
Outgoing commander and U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry warned, "There will be an increase in violence in the spring, and we can forecast an increase in violence in the summer," the CBC reported.
Eikenberry said that is because multinational forces have backed militants into a corner.
Fraser agreed with the assessment.
"That minority that's trying to destabilize and terrorize the Afghans and the legitimate authority are going to keep attacking it," Fraser said.
