Agents unable tie terror suspect to camp

LODI, Calif., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- An investigator in the trial of a California man accused of terrorist activity says no direct evidence links the suspect to a Pakistani paramilitary camp.

Pedro Aguilar, the lead FBI agent investigating Hamid Hayat of Lodi, Calif., testified in Hayat's trial agents had been unable to gather proof the 23-year-old suspect attended a paramilitary operation in Pakistan.

More testimony was scheduled Thursday. Hayat was accused of supporting terrorists and with lying to agents about attending the camp.

For a second day, videotapes of Hayat's five-hour interview by the FBI were shown to the jury. The FBI did most of the talking and Hayat seemed at times to be parroting them, the San Francisco Chronicle said.

Prosecutors say Hayat is a devoted holy warrior who admitted that he returned to the United States to await orders. Defense attorneys say he told aggressive FBI agents a series of lies in a misguided attempt to be helpful.
