DETROIT, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Detroit's zoo could close soon unless the city finds some way to fund its operations.
The City Council rejected a plan Saturday to transfer operation of the zoo to the Detroit Zoological Society, the Detroit Free Press reported. The 7-2 vote deprives the zoo of an operating budget and the city of $4 million in state aid.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said that shutdown is inevitable unless some version of the plan is resurrected.
Council members were concerned about the city's continuing responsibility for security at the zoo. Some council members were also reluctant to surrender control of another major cultural institution. The Detroit Art Museum is now operated by a non-profit organization and the aquarium has closed.
