COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The Danish newspaper that commissioned and published controversial cartoons of Mohammed has published an apology as a full-page ad in Saudi newspapers.
"Allow me in the name of Jyllands-Posten to apologize for what happened and declare my strong condemnation of any step that attacks specific religions, ethnic groups and peoples," Carsten Juste, the newspaper's editor, wrote. "I hope that with this I have removed the misunderstanding."
The cartoons, including one showing Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban, attracted little notice when they were first published in September. They sparked delayed protests that have spread throughout the Muslim world.
Jyllands-Posten at first refused to apologize, while Danish officials said they had no control over newspaper content.
The apology, which appeared Sunday, was submitted Feb. 5, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported. While it is unclear why its publication was delayed for two weeks, the newspaper suggested getting permission from the Saudi government may have taken that long.
