TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The Israeli government plans to decide Sunday whether to impose financial sanctions that could cripple the Palestinian Authority.
A new parliament with a majority from the Islamist Hamas party is to be sworn in Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the sanctions would remain in place until Hamas recognizes Israel and renounces terrorism, the Jerusalem Post reported.
The sanctions were discussed at a meeting Friday by Olmert and top defense and security officials.
"The swearing-in of the Palestinian parliament on Saturday rings a gong for us," Defense Secretary Shaul Mofaz said. "A Hamas government will mean an authority of terror and murder. Already today Hamas is part of the axis of evil that begins in Iran, continues to Syria, Hezbollah and now to the Palestinian Authority."
The sanctions would include freezing the transfer of tax revenues collected by Israel to the Palestinian Authority and barring Palestinians who work in Israel from entering.
