Errant street electricity kills dog

NEW YORK, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- New York's Con Ed admits it should have cut power long ago to wires that killed an 80-pound dog through stray electricity.

Barkis, a chow-collie, was hit by voltage from a Brooklyn street light. Con Ed blames a record-keeping snafu for the power not being chopped as scheduled seven years ago.

Barkis' owner, concert promoter Danny Kapilian, is furious about the situation, the New York Daily News said. He called Con Edison a "public menace" and is shopping for a lawyer.

Barkis was killed two years after Manhattan resident Jodie Lane was electrocuted by rogue current while walking her dogs in the East Village.

On Sunday, four tourists were stunned when they stepped on a snow-covered service box in Times Square.

Two days later, a black Lab named Marcus was hit with errant voltage from a burned-out cable on East 83rd Street.
