More Abu Ghraib pictures get public airing

SYDNEY, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- An Australian TV program has broadcast 60 previously unreleased pictures of Iraqis allegedly tortured by U.S. soldiers at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

Some of the pictures are similar to those that were broadcast in 2004, which led to charges against U.S. soldiers. The latest pictures also show six corpses and wounds from shotgun pellets.

The Bush administration has been fighting to keep the pictures secret in a court case with the American Civil Liberties Union.

The executive producer of SBS Dateline, which broadcast the photos Wednesday, said the pictures were leaked to the Australian TV public affairs show.

Mike Carey said he showed the pictures since it is important that people understand what happened at the Iraqi prison, the Melbourne newspaper, The Age, reported.

Carey said it is likely other journalists have the pictures.

U.S. commanders in Iraq have raised concerns the overcrowded prison has become a terrorist breeding ground, the newspaper reported.
