Giordano campaign settles with FEC

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The Federal Election Commission said it accepted $156,169 for election law violations by the 2000 U.S. Senate campaign of Philip Giordano.

The FEC, in a release Wednesday, said various officials with the Giordano campaign, which was trying to elect the former Waterbury, Conn., mayor to the U.S. Senate, agreed to pay fines stemming from numerous campaign act violations.

The commission said the violation includes the making and receiving of excessive contributions from individuals and prohibited corporate contributions and the failure to comply with various reporting requirements.

Among the violations the FEC release said, was a $300,000 donation from a relative of Giordano, which had been used as collateral for a loan to the campaign.

Giordano was defeated in the 2000 Senate race by Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., who claimed 63 percent of the vote in his re-election campaign. Giordano totaled 34 percent of the vote.
