Violence erupts amid Haiti ballot count

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Violence broke out in Haiti Monday amid frustrations over last week's presidential election.

Supporters of leading candidate Rene Preval contend the election was fixed and that he should be declared the winner of the election.

A former president, Preval was leading the vote count with more than 60 percent of the ballots just days after last Tuesday's election. However by the weekend, he saw his support base slip to below 50 percent.

Preval would need more than 50 percent of the vote to win the election outright. If he failed to do so, a second round of elections is scheduled for March pitting the top two vote getters.
