Bush hands out science, technology medals

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush presented National Medal for Science and Technology to 15 people and companies Monday.

"The work we honor today has improved the lives of people everywhere," Bush said in a White House ceremony. "It has helped to move our economy forward and it's helped to make sure that America is the leader in innovation in our world.

"The medals are our nation's way of expressing gratitude to gifted and visionary citizens."

This year's National Medal of Science laureates are: Kenneth Arrow, Stanford Calif.; Norman Borlaug, College Station, Texas; Robert Clayton, Chicago; Edwin Lightfoot, Madison, Wis.; Stephen Lippard, Cambridge, Mass.; Phillip Sharp, Cambridge, Mass.; Thomas Starzl, Pittsburgh, and Dennis Sullivan, Stony Brook, N.Y.

This year's National Medal of Technology Laureates are: Ralph Baser, Manchester, N.H.; Roger Easton, Canaan, N.H.; Gen-Probe, Inc., San Diego; IBM Microelectronics Division, Armonk, N.Y.; Industrial Light and Magic, San Francisco; Motorola, Inc., Schaumburg, Ill.; and PACCAR Inc., Bellevue, Wash.
