BANGKOK, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is offering to end the country's political turmoil through a referendum to amend the constitution.
About 5,000 people rallied outside Bangkok's Royal Plaza Saturday, chanting anti-Thaksin slogans. The prime minister has refused to quit, despite repeated rallies calling for him to go, the BBC reported.
The anti-Thaksin campaign was given momentum recently by his family's $1.9 billion sale of telecommunications giant Shin Corp.
The deal was heavily criticized because it was engineered so Thaksin's family avoided paying capital gains tax. Others objected to the deal because they said important Thai assets were being sold to foreigners.
Thaksin still enjoys considerable support in rural Thailand, the BBC said.
