HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann has won the endorsement of Pennsylvania's state GOP committee as their candidate to run against Gov. Ed Rendell.
The NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver and ABC sports commentator still has to defeat his only remaining Republican challenger, Jim Panyard, in the May 16 primary, but most politicians think that should be an easy win, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Also Saturday, the GOP state committee endorsed Jim Matthews to be its candidate for lieutenant governor. Matthews is the brother of MSNBC political commentator Chris Matthews.
Swann, speaking Saturday at the Harrisburg Hilton after receiving the Republican State Committee endorsement, urged the party to unite behind him and Mr. Matthews "as the best team to unseat Ed Rendell."
He attacked Rendell for raising the personal income tax and said the first-term Democrat has failed to deliver on his 2002 campaign promise to lower property taxes, the newspaper said.
