Japan considers sanctions against N.Korea

TOKYO, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso Friday suggested that Japan was considering sanctions against North Korea after bilateral talks in Beijing proved fruitless.

"It is sure that there are various proposals within the government," Aso said at a news conference in Tokyo. The proposals apparently include economic sanctions, Kyodo News reported, though Aso did not specify exactly what form of pressure would be brought to bear against Pyongyang to come forward with information on abducted Japanese citizens and make progress on other issues.

"We should not say now we will put pressure because we could end up not implementing that at all," Aso said.

However, he admitted that there were some positive results from the five-day talks that ended in Beijing Wednesday.

"We were able to talk frankly and we have seen signs that dialogue will continue," he said.
