Pope Benedict XVI plans trip to Poland

VATICAN CITY, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI plans a trip to Poland in May, including a visit to the concentration camp at Auschwitz for prayers.

The pope's itinerary for the three-day trip includes Warsaw; the shrine of the Virgin Mary in Czestochowa; the town of Wadowice, where Pope John Paul II was born; and Krakow, where John Paul served as archbishop, ANSA, the Italian news agency, reported.

The visit to Auschwitz is seen as especially significant because Benedict was born in Germany.

Benedict plans three more international trips this year -- to Spain, Germany and September.
