Dozens missing in from sunken ferry

JAKARTA, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- At least 113 people were rescued from a sunken Indonesian ferry but dozens more are feared missing in the seas off Rote Island, 1,250 miles from Jakarta.

The ferry sank Tuesday and some of the survivors spent all night in the water before being rescued. One person died, reports the BBC.

Officials were not sure how many people were on the boat but feared those still missing could number in the dozens.

Ferries are a common means of transport in Indonesia, but overcrowding has often led to accidents, the report said.

The ferry was on its way to Rote Island from Kupang on the western side of Timor Island Tuesday evening. Two hours into the journey, the boat had engine trouble in the rough seas and capsized, the report said.
