MONROEVILLE, Pa., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann has all but clinched the state Republican Party's endorsement for Pennsylvania governor, it was reported.
The Pittsburgh Tribune Review said Swann had the support of 187 members of the party's steering committee in unofficial tallies, after beating Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton in a straw vote of state committee members from the southwest corner of the state Tuesday. It takes about 180 votes to win the committee's endorsement on Feb. 11 in Harrisburg, the newspaper said.
"Obviously, it looks good now," Ray Zaborney, the executive director of Swann's campaign told the newspaper. "We're encouraged by our numbers, but we're going to keep working until Lynn Swann is the endorsed candidate."
The former first-round draft pick by the Steelers in 1974 was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2001. In his nine-year playing career, Swann had 336 receptions for 5,462 yards and 51 touchdowns and played on four Super Bowl championship teams.
