BURLINGTON, Ky., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A Kentucky judge approved an $85 million settlement to end the only U.S. class-action suit by sexually abused parishioners against a Roman Catholic diocese.
Burlington, Ky., Judge John Potter approved the settlement Tuesday in a 15-page opinion, saying he believed Covington, Ky., Bishop Roger Foys settled the case to avoid the publicity of a trial and correct past employees' wrongdoing, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
"Contrary to what might be the case in other dioceses, the court believes that this professed desire is genuine and played a significant role in the diocese's decision," Potter wrote.
"This is a landmark case and a landmark decision," lead victims' attorney Stan Chesley wrote. "We feel comfortable that we will be able to move more forward expeditiously" in disbursing money to an estimated 350 people.
The final agreement was $35 million less than originally proposed in June, which made headlines worldwide as a potential record larger than the $100 million Diocese of Orange, Calif., agreement in 2004.
