IAEA to vote on Iran nuke resolution

VIENNA, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency is set to vote on a resolution condemning Iran for its nuclear program but refraining from taking any action.

The BBC reports the text of the resolution gives a March deadline for cooperation that the United States and other countries say is lacking in the growing row over Iran's push to enrich uranium.

Iran claims the program is only for energy purposes and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said it was the country's sovereign right to develop nuclear power.

The United States and some European countries call the claims a front for making nuclear weapons, and are warning Iran to stop or they will send the dispute to the U.N. Security Council for sanctions.

Ahmadinejad said referral to the Security Council will end diplomacy.

The resolution calls for Iran to cooperate with nuclear inspectors but says any action to the Security Council will wait until March when an IAEA report on the matter is due.

Russia and China they may veto any Security Council sanctions, urging a more diplomatic end to the conflict.
