Paper: Abramoff didn't lobby Bush

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty to a series of U.S. charges, attended at least six White House functions, The Washington Times reported.

The newspaper cited an unnamed source "familiar with the visits" as saying Abramoff's trips to the White House were generally social visits such as Hanukkah celebrations. The source said Abramoff didn't lobby President George Bush during those occasions although pictures of the participants, as is usual for a White House function, were taken.

The White House has refused to release the pictures because, spokesmen said, the Abramoff investigation continues and any photos would be used for political reasons. Several Republicans Sunday suggested the White House release information on Abramoff pictures and White House meetings.

Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials in a plea agreement. As part of the deal, Abramoff is aiding in a wider investigation into lobbying practices in Capitol Hill.

Democrats say the Abramoff scandal involved only Republicans, but the GOP counters that Abramoff clients also gave money and sought support from Democrats.
