Iran says U.N. threat will end diplomacy

TEHRAN, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Iran's chief nuclear negotiator warned Tuesday that if its atomic program goes to the U.N. Security Council, it will be the end of diplomacy.

Ali Larijani reacted angrily to word that ministers from Europe, the United States, Russia and China had asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to report Iran to the Security Council.

"We consider any referral or report of Iran to the Security Council as the end of diplomacy," Larijani said on state television.

Britain, France, Germany and the United States suspect Iran is aiming to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists its program is limited to domestic electricity generation.

The IAEA has set an emergency meeting Thursday in Vienna, where the draft of the report to the Security Council will be drawn up. However, the council is expected to take at least a month to review the report on Iran's newly re-opened nuclear facility, the BBC said.
