Two die after skaters fall through ice

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Two people died after a group of 12 ice skaters fell through the ice of Lake Malaren, which stretches west from Stockholm, Sweden.

A 31-year-old man died shortly after the accident Saturday and and a 26-year-old man died Sunday morning. A man in his 50s remained in intensive care, the Sweden Local reported.

Police say a group of around 100 ice skaters were out on Malaren, near Stallarholmen, on Saturday when the ice gave way. Police said that 12 skaters ended up in the water.

Helicopters from Visby and Arlanda joined the rescue effort, winching people directly out of the water and taking seven people to Karolinska hospital in Solna.
