Kerry joins Alito filibuster effort

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., has interrupted a trip to Europe to speak in support of a filibuster against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito.

Kerry left the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to throw his support behind continuing the filibuster of Alito until Tuesday, The Washington Post reports.

He called into question what he considered a rush to confirm a politically and ideologically driven nominee.

Despite acknowledging that Alito has the votes to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Kerry and others want to keep the fight alive as long as possible.

It would take 60 senators to end the debate, which is expected to happen Monday.

A vote on Alito could take place as early as Tuesday.

At least four Democratic senators -- three facing re-election this year in states Bush won in 2004 -- have said they would vote for Alito.
