Maryland prison guard shot by inmate

HAGERSTOWN, Md., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A Maryland prison guard was in critical condition Thursday after being shot in the head with his own gun allegedly by an inmate he was guarding in a hospital.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., as the corrections officer was working an overtime shift, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The identities of the guard and suspect were not immediately available.

A source told the newspaper the inmate allegedly then bolted outside, stole a taxi, and drove 5 miles north into Pennsylvania, where he crashed the cab. He then fled on foot back into Hagerstown and was apprehended at an industrial complex.
