Hungary puts icebreakers on alert

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Hungarian officials Thursday ordered two icebreakers to stand by for clearing the Danube River in Croatia and Serbia to prevent flooding.

Environment and Water Management Minister Miklos Persanyi said icebreakers in Budapest are ready to head south should ice jams appear in neighboring countries. The goal is to prevent jams, which would back up and flood southern Hungary, the MTI news agency said.
