MANORVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A Long Island, N.Y., girl was accidentally killed by the family's golden retriever, who played tug-of-war with her scarf in the back yard.
Kaitlyn Hassard, of Manorville came home from kindergarten at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and went into the yard with Jesse, the 18-month-old, 70-pound pet.
About 10 minutes later, the girl's mother sent her son to check on the girl, and she was found lying on the grass, the New York Post said. Her mother, a nurse, began CPR as her father called an ambulance. The girl, who celebrated her sixth birthday last weekend, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said it appeared the girl had been dragged along the ground, but she was not bitten.
Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commander of the Suffolk County Homicide Squad said the dog was taken to an animal shelter, although officials there were uncertain of its fate.
"The family has informed the animal shelter that they don't wish to bring the dog back into the house," Brookhaven Deputy Town Supervisor Mark Grossman told the New York Daily News.
