KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Seven Taliban rebels have escaped from a high-security prison on the outskirts of Kabul, a prison official said Tuesday.
National prison director Gen. Abdul Salam Bakshi said the jailbreak occurred Sunday at Policharki Prison while relatives were visiting the prisoners, Aljazeera.net reported.
All seven had been captured while fighting for the Taliban, he said, adding that a manhunt had yielded no results as yet.
Bakshi said the men were from the former Taliban strongholds of Helmand and Kandahar in the southern part of the country. He said they were serving sentences of 16 or 17 years.
Ten prison guards suspected of aiding the escape were arrested, Bakshi said.
The prison is currently being revamped to hold Afghan terror suspects soon to be returned from U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
