Lost hikers rescued from desert

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Two hikers lost in the Anza-Borrego Desert in California were rescued after spending the weekend in frigid temperatures.

Allison Lowe and Doug Vaughn, both adult hikers, got lost in the rugged terrain after getting separated from a group of 10 other hikers Saturday afternoon, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. Later, both also got separated in the desert.

A helicopter search team found Vaughan while a search team on foot found Lowe.

"They were both released without medical care," said a member of the rescue teams. "We gave them water and food and they were ready to go."

He said: "The No. 1 mistake they did was they didn't stick together. If you go in as a group, you go out as a group."

Authorities said both were lucky as temperatures had dipped to 35 degrees Saturday night. The two had only packed lightly for the six-hour day hike when temperatures were in the mid-60s.
