Mom accused of killing not remorseful

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- While many in New York City shed a tear for the 7-year-old girl allegedly starved, tortured and beaten to death, her mother did not, her fellow inmates say.

Several women who shared a holding cell with Nixzaliz Santiago after she was arrested for second-degree murder for the death of her daughter, said the mother never wept for her daughter, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.

"She was the only one who wasn't crying. She just sat there remorseless," said Tanya Morales, a mother of two who was charged with driving with a suspended license. "She didn't look like she had just lost her daughter ... This woman never shed a tear."

Morales said others in the holding cell were sickened when Santiago showed she cared only for husband and she said the daughter was disobedient, stole food, beat her siblings and didn't deserve any Christmas presents.

A guard broke up the discussion and instructed those in the holding cell to stop discussing the high-profile case, Morales said.
