Monkeys overrunning New Delhi

NEW DELHI, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The High Court in the Indian capital has ordered city officials to get rid of monkeys that have been bothering a large law center.

The court gave city authorities one month to get rid of the monkeys, which have been harassing people at Tis Hazari -- the largest law complex in Asia, with 162 courts. The order came after a petitioner complained the monkeys were attacking lawyers and their clients and snatching their food, the BBC reported.

"If you cannot catch monkeys, then better close down your institution," Judges Vijender Jain and Rekha Sharma told municipal officials.

The Press Trust of India reported a city lawyer said it was no longer the municipality's responsibility to catch monkeys -- and that monkey catchers have been reluctant to sign on for the job, after a monkey catcher hired by the municipality was mauled during an operation and needed 72 stitches.

The monkeys have moved into residential and business areas because New Delhi's forests are shrinking, the BBC reported.
