ST. LOUIS, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt wants criminal charges or civil cases brought against electric utility AmerenUE for a breach at the Taum Sauk reservoir last month.

Around 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, the northwest reservoir wall burst open, unleashing more than a billion gallons of water that scoured parts of Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park. The flood swept away the home of the park superintendent and his family, who all survived.

Blunt's spokesman, Spence Jackson, said a Department of Natural Resources investigation had uncovered problems that will be given to state Attorney General Jay Nixon in the hope that Nixon will act, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

In a statement, AmerenUE general counsel Steve Sullivan said he was confident there would be no finding of criminal liability.

"We have said from the beginning that we are taking responsibility for this incident," Sullivan said.
