'Mad Slasher' wants to apologize

TORONTO, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The serial killer known as the Mad Slasher says he is sorry for the rapes and murders he committed 30-years-ago in southwestern Ontario.

He ways he wants to make amends by meeting the relatives of his victims so they can vent their anger at him, the Toronto Sun reported.

Christian Herbert Magee is awaiting an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling on whether he should have the chance for some limited freedom. He has been in custody since 1977 after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for murdering three teenagers.

"Talk to Magee? That's a definite no to that," Geoffrey Scholes, whose 15-year-old sister was raped and murdered by Magee in 1976, told the newspaper.

Last May, the Ontario Review Board granted Magee's request to be transferred from a maximum security facility in Penetang to a medium security mental health unit in Toronto.

Officials at Penetang opposed the order, saying Magee was still a "sadistic serial murderer" likely to offend again if released, the newspaper said.
