WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Gen. George W. Casey Jr. is extending his assignment as the top allied commander in Iraq by at least six months at the request of the White House.
Senior Pentagon and military officials told The Washington Post the move will ensure that the current U.S. military-diplomatic team there remains in place into 2007.
Casey had been expected to transfer to a new assignment this summer as part of the Army's regular rotation of top officers, but at the request of President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has agreed to stay on in Baghdad, the newspaper said.
"He knows that stability is important and he feels good about the direction things are going and wants to help keep it on track," said a senior Pentagon official who was granted anonymity because Casey's extension had not been publicly announced.
