Australian ID card idea gains support

CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Australia's Nationals Party, which had previously opposed a proposal for a national identity card, now says it is ready for a serious debate on the subject.

Nationals Senate leader Ron Boswell, who had rejected the identity card idea years ago, now says times have changed and that it should be reconsidered, reports the Australian. He cited the London and Bali terrorist bombings as reasons for changing his mind.

"We would still need some convincing, but the Nationals' door isn't closed to a national identity card scheme," he said.

Australia's Attorney General Philip Ruddock will present the findings of a departmental review of the proposal to the Cabinet by the end of March. The review was ordered by Prime Minister John Howard in the wake of the London bombings.
