MOSCOW, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Muslim leaders Tuesday to discuss the safe return of pilgrims from Mecca.
The annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj, which Muslims are supposed to make at least once in their lifetimes, ended Tuesday. To get home from Saudi Arabia, Russian pilgrims may have to cross areas where borders are closed because of avian influenza or where they might risk infection.
Putin promised to provide assistance to get Russian pilgrims home, RIA Novosti reported.
Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief medical officer, spoke earlier of the risk of returning pilgrims importing the disease. So far, all people who have contracted the disease have been infected by close contact with infected poultry.
