Bachelet maintains lead in Chile polls

SANTIAGO, Chile, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Chile's socialist presidential candidate Michelle Bachelet maintains a strong lead over right-wing businessman Sebastian Pinera ahead of Jan. 15 elections.

With one week to go, Bachelet has 41 percent of the vote, while Pinera has 29.7 percent. The remaining Chileans polled said they were still undecided or declined to say for whom they would vote, La Tercera newspaper reported.

If elected, Bachelet would become Chile's first female president.
