Bolivia warms to Venezuela's Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Bolivia's president-elect Evo Morales openly embraced Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's policies on fighting alleged U.S. imperialism.

Morales met with Chavez in Caracas Wednesday with military pomp, and discussed sharing information on agriculture, healthcare, education and energy.

"We are here to resolve social problems, economic problems," Morales said. He won the recent election on pledges to raise social spending and turn away from free-market policies, the BBC said. He will be sworn into office in about two weeks.

In a news conference shortly before Morales left, Chavez said the two men were building an "axis of good, and took another swipe at the United States.

"The axis of evil -- do you know who the axis of evil is? Washington -- that's the axis of evil. And their allies in the world, who threaten, who invade, who kill, who assassinate," he said.

Morales is also scheduled to visit Europe, South Africa, China and Brazil.
