OTTAWA, Alberta, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Canadian investigators will question the finance minister regarding a leak of a tax-cutting plan to the public to determine whether insider trading occurred.
Ralph Goodale said he'll be cooperating next week with an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Toronto Globe & Mail reports.
At issue is whether a plan to cut corporate dividend taxes -- to equal competition with income trusts -- was illegally leaked before it was officially announced Nov. 23.
Opponents of the Liberal Party administration said income-trust trading spiked prior to the official announcement, and blamed the party for that.
The issue comes three weeks before a federal election. Opponents are calling for Goodale's removal from office now, but Prime Minister Paul Martin has refused.
Police said there is no evidence Goodale broke any laws but are looking into the issue further to see if anyone else did.
