BAGHDAD, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Three bombs in Iraq Saturday morning brought deadly violence for a second straight day as U.S. officials say the insurgency is weakening.

CNN reports five Iraqi civilians were killed and two injured when a bomb exploded in Khalis. The target was the Iraqi Islamic Party's headquarters. Khalis is 20 miles northwest of Baquba.

Two Iraqi police officers died in an attack on a patrol in Baghdad. Four civilians and a police officer were injured.

Both incidents happened at about 9:30 a.m., Iraqi time.

Four Interior Ministry police commandos were injured in attack an hour earlier.

Six people were killed and more than a dozen injured Friday in Baghdad during a round of mortar attacks and car bombings.

On Friday Maj. Gen. William Webster Jr., the commander of Task Force Baghdad, said his troops have been able to weaken the insurgency.
