JERUSALEM, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- An Israeli politician warned Tuesday that if Iran's nuclear proliferation is not halted, the country will have a nuclear weapon ready within two years.

The warning came from Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuval Steinitz, who said such a development would pose a threat not only to Israel's very existence, but the entire world, Ha'aretz reported.

"Within one to two years, they will have a nuclear bomb, and then there will be a new Middle East -- threatening, black and dangerous," he said.

He called on the global community, under U.S. leadership, to take steps to monitor and thwart the Iranian program, the report said.
